How to create text on a path

Hello Everyone! Monica here, today we are going to be talking about text on a path and text in a shape. For this tutorial I’ll be using Photoshop CS 6. I will also show you instructions for PSE 11.

Introduction

Putting your text on a path or in a shape is a fun way to add something different to your page. You can text around the whole page or around a photo. When you text in a shape you can use any shape you want to add something extra to your page.

This part of the tutorial will cover PSCS 6

Step One – Getting started

First you need to go to window then click on paths so that your path palette opens.

IMG1

Now that you have the Paths palette open you should see this on the side.

IMG2

Step Two – Setting up your Path

Choose what path you want your text to be. You can choose a shape to text around if you want. I’m going to use a large square for this example.

IMG3

You will need to rasterize or simplify the shape you want to use.

IMG4

Now that you have that rasterized or simplified you want to select the shape you are using. Use your magic wand and select the shape you are using.

IMG5

Step Three – Placing text on your path

Now that you have it selected you want to click on your paths palette.

IMG6

On the Path Palette you will see a circle with squares on the top, bottom, left and right.

IMG7

Once you click that you will see a layer on your path.

IMG8

Now you need to select your text tool.

IMG9

Now you want to click on the path you just made. This will allow you to type your text around the shape.

IMG10

Now you type out what you want to say and it will go on the path you have made.

IMG11

Now you can go back to your layers palette and remove the shape so your text is just on a path.

IMG12

You could leave the shape and add a photo to it.

IMG13

That is how to text on a path.

Step Four — Text in a shape

Now if you want to text in a shape you need to choose a shape. I’m choosing a Circle for this example. You need to rastrize/simplify this shape.

IMG14

Again you will use your wand and select the shape.

IMG15

Now that you have it selected you want to click on your paths palette.

IMG16

On the Path Palette you will see a circle with squares on the top, bottom, left and right.

IMG17

Once you click that you will see a layer on your path.

IMG18

Now you need to select your text tool.

IMG19

Now instead of clicking on the EDGE of the shape you want to click inside it.

IMG20

You can see how the text stays inside the shape.

IMG21

This part of the tutorial will cover PSE 11

You need to click on your text tool.

PSE11IMG1

Now you will see several options. You need to click on the one on the far right in the second row.

PSE11IMG2

Choose what shape you want to use. Draw the shape on the page.

PSE11IMG3

Now you click on the line and type what you want.

PSE11IMG4

Another way it to click on the text tool and choose the very last option. This will allow you to make your own path!

PSE11IMG5

Now you can draw your path or modify one.

To draw one you just draw what you want to text on

PSE11IMG6

Now you just click on the path you drew and type your text.

Final thoughts

Putting text in a shape or on a path is a fun way to add something extra to your page. By using text in a shape you can keep your journaling on the journal cards that you find in many kits!
